What can help a pupil who understands maths but cannot retrieve number facts quickly?

Slow number-fact retrieval can coexist with strong mathematical understanding. Support access to reasoning while teaching a small, well-chosen set of facts and derivation strategies.

Separate fluency from understanding

Compare an untimed explanation with a rapid-recall task. Ask how the pupil derives a fact from one they know. Avoid interpreting slow answers as weak concepts when their representations and explanations are secure.

Teach connected practice

Use relationships such as doubles, near doubles or multiplication inverses, followed by brief spaced retrieval. Keep the target set manageable and give accurate feedback. Allow appropriate aids in tasks whose purpose is complex reasoning.

Review retention and access

Check facts after a delay and look at whether calculation demands still interrupt the main task. Record accuracy and strategy use before speed. Adjust practice if it creates distress or produces only short-lived performance on the same list.

These sources inform the wider approach. The classroom example illustrates practice; it is not a research case study.
